Description

  • Shoji Ueda
  • SELF-PORTRAIT WITH CAT ('ME AND CAT')
  • Gelatin silver print
signed, titled, and dated in Japanese in pencil on the reverse, circa 1948

Provenance

Acquired from Zeit Foto Salon, Tokyo, circa 1988

Condition

This early, impressively graphic and warm-toned panoramic print, on semi-matte paper with a slightly pebbled surface, is in generally good condition. The edges are rubbed, and the corners are bumped. The upper right corner is creased, and there is a small strip at the lower right margin edge where the top paper ply is missing. There is a 3 1/2-inch sharp crease at the upper left corner that extends into the print about 1 1/4 inches. This does not appear to break the emulsion. In addtion, there is a soft linear diagonal crease that is 11 1/4 inches long, at the right side. There is light soiling in the left and right margins. On the reverse, there is age-darkening at the periphery of the print.
