Description

  • Harry Callahan
  • TORN SIGN
  • gelatin silver
mounted to Brudno illustration board, signed in pencil on the mount, framed, circa 1946

Provenance

Acquired from Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, 1997

Condition

This striking, early print, on paper with a surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. Visible upon close examination in raking light are the following: occasional pen-point-sized impressions that do not break the emulsion overall; a small starburst-shaped impression that does not break the emulsion in the lower left quadrant of the image; and a very small surface scratch that is just visible in the lower right quadrant near the lower edge of the image. None of these issues are immediately apparent, and they do not detract from the quite fine appearance of this print. There is minor light soiling from handling, primarily at the mount's edges. When examined under ultra-violet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce. On the reverse of the frame, there is a Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, label.
