the photographer's printing notations in pencil on the reverse, flush-mounted, title, date, and credited and initialed by Anne Kennedy in pencil and a Light Gallery stamp, with number '77.055,' on the reverse, 1945, probably printed in the 1960s

Provenance

Condition

As is frequently seen with Paul Strand's photographs, this print has the photographer's extensive printing notations written on the reverse. Because the print is flush-mounted to thick paper, these are only partially visible. But the following notations can be made out at various places on the reverse: '3,' 'Ill. Spec,' 'F 34,' and 'Amidol f __.' This photograph, on paper with a slight surface sheen, is essentially in excellent condition. There is a broad range of tonality from rich blacks to true whites. The reverse of the mount is numbered '#3204-C' and '311-U' in pencil. The reverse of the mount is hinged with two pieces of linen tape to a mat.

Catalogue Note

The Paul Strand Archive catalogues this image as Landscape, Winter, Vermont, 1945.  According to Strand authority Anthony Montoya, Strand made this photograph with his 5 x 7-inch Graflex camera, and is believed to have made one other print of this image, a slightly enlarged later print from the 1950s or 1960s like the print offered here.  Strand made a third print from this negative, but it is smaller and cropped to show only the lower portion of the image.  Both of these prints are in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
