Condition

As is frequently seen with Paul Strand's photographs, this print has the photographer's extensive printing notations written on the reverse. Because the print is flush-mounted to thick paper, these are only partially visible. But the following notations can be made out at various places on the reverse: 'Ill. Spec,' 'F 63 . 32,' and 'Amidol.' This photograph is on a lightly-textured paper with a somewhat cool tonality. It is essentially in excellent condition. There is very minor edge and corner wear and small losses at the periphery of the print, which does not affect the image. The reverse of the mount is numbered '#266' and annotated with matting notations in pencil. The reverse of the mount is hinged with two pieces of linen tape to a mat.

Catalogue Note

The Paul Strand Archive catalogues this image as Interior, The Stove, Prospect Harbor, Maine, 1946.  According to Strand authority Anthony Montoya, Strand made this photograph with his 8 x 10-inch Deardorff view camera, and it is believed that the print offered here is one of 4 extant prints of the image, all of which were printed in the 1950s or 1960s.  Aside from the present print, there is a print in The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the University of New Mexico Art Museum, and The Paul Strand Archive, Millerton.  The photograph was originally reproduced on p. 208 of the 1950 edition of Time In New England published by Oxford University Press, and reproduced on p. 217 of the 1980 Aperture republication of Time In New England.
