Description
- Ansel Adams
- 'WINTER STORM YOSEMITE VALLEY' (CLEARING WINTER STORM)
- gelatin silver
mounted to Hi-Art illustration board, signed in ink on the mount, two Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 6 and 7), titled in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1938, probably printed in the 1960s (400 Photographs, p. 123; Yosemite and the Range of Light, cover; Classic Images, pl. 46)
Condition
This print is in generally excellent condition. Visible in raking light are various small deposits of original retouching, primarily in the sky area and in the mountains. Upon extremely close examination, a faint ½-inch horizontal crease, which may have occurred prior to mounting, is visible in the lower portion of the image. The upper right edge of the print is ever-so-lightly bumped.
The mount is lighter in color along a thin ¼-inch band at its periphery.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 6 (1962 to 1963) and stamp 7 (1963 to 1973) on the reverse of this print's mount.
