Description

  • David Clark
  • PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN
  • daguerreotype
sixth-plate daguerreotype, with hand tinting and gilt-detail, the photographer's credit and 'N. Brunswick' stamped on the mat, with a modern seal, cased, 1850s

Condition

This exquisitely-rendered portrait is exceptional for its subject and for its high level of detail, with individual hairs visible on the sitter's head. Rose-colored tinting has been expertly applied to the sitter's cheeks, and gold has been used to highlight the pen purposefully held in the sitter's left hand. The plate is nearly flawless. An uneven, thin border of tarnish follows the mat's oval shape. This does not detract from the plate's fine appearance. The reverse of the plate appears somewhat silvered, indicating that it was electroplated a second time.
