Description

  • Sally Mann
  • UNTITLED, FROM SECOND SIGHT
  • platinum
platinum print, mounted, signed, dated, and copyrighted in pencil on the mount, framed, 1979; accompanied by a first edition of Second Sight: The Photographs of Sally Mann (Boston: David R. Godine, 1983), large square 4to, pictorial wrappers (Second Sight, cover and p. 44; Still Time, p. 35) (2)

Condition

This platinum print is in generally excellent condition. The print is mounted to a thin paper mount with deckled edges. There is minor soiling from handling in the upper mount corners. The reverse of the print is affixed to a modern mount. The book is in generally good to very good condition. The flexible wrappers are somewhat rubbed and scuffed, with the occasional handling crease, but the binding is tight. The laminate used on the wrappers is beginning to separate slightly at the hinges. The top edge is foxed toward the head of the spine.

Catalogue Note

Second Sight was Sally Mann's second published volume, and is her first anthology.  It includes a variety of photographs: landscapes, portraits, platinum still life studies, and selections from her 'Lewis Law Portfolio,' this last the subject of an exhibition and accompanying catalogue at the Corcoran Gallery in 1977.  The introduction to Second Sight is by Jane Livingston, who had organized the Corcoran exhibition.   In Second Sight, the publisher David Godine has attempted to approximate the physical characteristics of two different types of photographs: silver prints are reproduced on glossy stock; platinum prints are reproduced on matte stock.
