Catalogue Note

A combination of affairs, scandals and divorce required William Roger Snow (1834-1907) to change his name to Clifford Merton and, later, to Richard André. As an author and illustrator of adult and children's literature he produced a prolific quantity of work, particularly in collaboration with the writer Juliana Ewing. This example is thought to be an unpublished illustration for the McLoughlin Bros edition of The Night Before Christmas.
