Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 4 June 1980, lot 13 (as workshop of Quentin Massys).
Condition
The painting is a little softer and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The flat panel seems to consist of one plank and is cradled. The paint layer is secure and under a slightly dirty varnish. In particular the costume of the figure on the left is nicely preerved with a lot of detail still intact. Some old, somewhat crude retouches can be observed with the naked eye, e.g. in Mary's right cheek, in her cloak and headdress, and in the forehead of the figure in the centre background. Inspection under UV light reveals additional, somewhat crude scattered retouches, e.g. in the face and cloak of the figure most right, and in Christ's chest.
Offered in a plain black wood frame with a gilt fillet in good condition.

Catalogue Note
The design is derived from the Master of the Holy Blood's original composition in the Capilla Real, Granada, which is closely related to the Master's principal work, the Altarpiece of the Lamentation in the Chapel of Saint Sang, in Bruges1, although with differences in the attitudes of the principal figures.
