Description
- Adriaen Isenbrandt
- The Virgin and Child
- oil on panel
Condition
The actual painting is a little softer and somewhat less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The support consists of a single stable panel. There is a horizontal old split of approx. 10 cm. long centre right running in from the right hand margin and two other old cracks lower left and right, all visible in the catalogue illustration.
The paint surface, under a slightly dirty varnish, is now secure but there is evidence of old lifting in the background and old flaking in the figures.
Inspection under UV light reveals old scattered retouchings, more frequently in Mary's dress.
Offered in a black and gold painted frame with a significant loss along the lower margin.

Catalogue Note
This is one of several versions of a design that seems to have predominantly circulated in Bruges and which was widely used by, amongst others, Adriaen Isenbrandt.
