Description
- Joachim Govertsz. Camphuysen
- A rocky mountain landscape with a stronghold on a hill top, shepherds with their flock beyond
signed with initials lower left: Ig(in compendium) C
- oil on panel
Condition
The actual painting is a little less yellow and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The bevelled panel seems to consist of two horizontal planks. There is a stabilised horizontal split in the lower plank which is reinforced with a strip of canvas to the reverse. The horizontal split is slightly visible to the front. Some losses to the panel can be seen along the lower edge and in the lower right corner. The paint surface seems to be well preserved, especially in the landscape. There is a small scratch in the upper centre. Otherwise no major damages are apparent. The paint layer is under a clear varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals retouchings along the horizontal split and some tiny scattered retouchings in the sky. There is an area of overpaint in the sky in the upper centre. Offered in a gilt wooden frame in good condition with some tiny chips.
