Description

  • Tankard sleeve with a relief of mermaids and sea nymphs mounted as an inkwell
  • ivory, mounted on silver gilt
the silver fully marked, London, 1829, with a crowned I.B of John Bridge for Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, and scratched: 1174 on the underside

Condition

Overall the condition of the ivory is good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is a chip to the tip of one of the tails that is pointing upwards and the tongue of one of the fish on the underside is slightly loose. The silver has some slight tarnishing and a few minor scratches. The flange on the inside of the lid is slightly warped.

For similar facial and body types compare a sleeve in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum representing Diana and her Nymphs which is based on engravings by Saenredam after Hendrik Goltzius.
