Rare woodcut printed in black with chiaroscuro effect, 1899, the first state (of two) printed on wove paper, the second state printed on Japon pelure, the grey and chiaroscuro effect is produced by the imposition of the second state on Japon pelure over the impression of the first state on wove paper, not cited in Kornfeld where 27 other impressions of this subject are recorded, only 12 of which have this spectacular chiaroscuro effect, printed by the artist in Tahiti
Provenance
August Laube, Zurich
Condition
With margins (the Japon pelure has not been cut and is overhanging, with associated slight cockling), in good condition apart from occasional staining possibly associated with the original adhesive used to glue the two sheets together, mainly in upper left corner of sheet and along lower edge of sheet, away from the image, there is a short (12mm) horizontal repaired tear at lower left edge of wove paper, pale foxing in upper right margin of wove paper and occasionally verso, a diagonal crease (circa 7,5cm) along lower left edge of wove paper and other minor creasing along edges, framed.
