Very rare woodcut, circa 1490-1500, with extensive, early hand-colouring in green, blue, red, light brown, pale rose and pale yellow, Schreiber cites only five impressions of this subject (all hand-coloured), the present impression is possibly the one described by Schreiber as being at Kennedy & Co., New York

Condition
Trimmed to the borderline, in good condition apart from worm holes on the throne at right, one in the right edge and another on the left shoulder of the Virgin, unframed.

Catalogue Note
The lower, central part of the composition is decorated with a mitre and two shields associated with the Bishop of Augsburg and Bishop Frederic of Zollern. At far left and far right, the coat-of-arms decorated with lions signify the House of Dillingen.
This woodcut appeared in several works published by Erhard Ratdolt in Augsburg: the Breviarium Augustanum 1493; the Antiphonarium, 1495; and the Missale Augustanum, 1496.
The four other impressions cited in Schreiber are the following: Berlin Kupferstichkabinett; Maihingen (Fürstl. Oettingen-Wallersteinsche Sammlungen); Minneapolis Institute of art, Minnesota and one whereabouts unknown, formerly in the collection of Edward Schultze, Vienna
