Very rare woodcut printed in dark brown, circa 1455-1465, with contemporary hand-colouring in green, rose madder lake, black, grey, pale rose and pale brown, Schreiber cites only one other impression of this subject (also hand-coloured)

Provenance

The book (see note on the website) in which this cut was pasted had ownership inscriptions on the title of the Convent of Saint Anna, Bamberg; ex coll. General Theological Seminary, New York City; their sale Christie's New York, November 1981, lot 373 ($9,700)

Condition

With wide uneven margins, a few holes and small tears in the margins (away from the composition), a horizontal tear (now backed) (approximately 25mm) at upper left edge of sheet extending 18mm into the image, staining (mostly towards the edges and the margins), slight paper discoloration, some wrinkling, unframed.

This cut was removed from inside the upper cover of volume III of Petrus Lombardus, Sententiarum libri IV, [edited by Johann Beckenhaub, with commentary by Bonaventura], [Nuremberg], Anton Koberger, [after 2 May, 1941] with Tabula super libros sententiarum, [Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, n.d.] (Hain 3530).
