Catalogue Note
The painted oval oak 'frame' in the present painting suggests it to be an early example of Wright's work, dating to the mid-1660s. The feature is comparable to that found in his portrait of Magdalen Aston, Lady Burdett, in Nottingham.
We are grateful to Dr Duncan Thompson for endorsing the attribution on the basis of photographs.
