Condition

The flat oak support is uncradled and bevelled along the upper margin. The painting has been recently cleaned, restored and revarnished. The paint surface in general is in an excellent state of preservation with much of the impasto and original brushwork intact. What restoration there is is very minor and, apart from a small grouping of retouchings on the sitter's right cheek, is limited to minor, scattered retouchings. The painting requires no further attention and is ready to hang. Offered in a modern ebony frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

One of the wax seals on the reverse displays the coats-of arms of the Lanskoy and Dolgorukov families of Russia. The families were joined through the marriage of Yakov Dmitriyevich Lanskoy to Praskoyva Nikolayevna Dolgorukova (1770-1820) and the seal here thus pertains to them or their son Vladimir Yakovlevich Lanskoy (1800-20). Yakov Dmitriyevich Lanskoy was the brother of General Alexander Dmitriyevich Lanskoy (1758-1784), a favourite of Catherine II.
