Condition

STRUCTURE The 1st (man in a blue jacket): The canvas has not been lined. The 2nd (man in a red jacket): The canvas has not been lined. PAINT SURFACE The 1st (man in a blue jacket): The painting appears to be in fair condition. There are some scattered paint losses most notcieably in the lower left hand corner and to the right of the sitter's head, as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. The paint appears to be in a stable condition however it appears to be thin in places most noticeably in the sitte's left arm and in the sky. There appears to be a thick varnish overall. The 2nd (man in a red jacket): The painting appears to be in fair condition. There is wear in evidence at the lower corner, and scattered minor paint loss and abrasions as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. The paint is thin in places and there appears to be a thick coat of varnish overall. There appear to have been some localised cleaning to the head. ULTRAVIOLET The 1st (man in a blue jacket): Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish making further inspection difficult. The 2nd (man in a red jacket): Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish making further inspection difficult.
