Description
- Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger
- Portrait of Frances, Countess of Hertford, later Countess of Richmond (1578-1639)
- oil on panel, in a carved wood frame
Provenance
Anonymous Sale, London, Sotheby's, 12 July 1989, lot 14
Condition
STRUCTURE
Original panel.
PAINT SURFACE
The paint surface appears to be in good stable condition given it's age. There are four very minor paint losses in the upper centre, several small abrasions to the extreme centre right caused by rubbing with the frame, and there is some minor paint loss down the left hand panel join caused by a slight bowing in the panel. There is a very fine craquelure thoughout.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a combination of infilling to the craquelure and minor vertical retoucing down the grain in the cheeks and forehead of the face and the neck. There is also some very minor scattered retouching in the chest and neckline of the sitter's dress. Despite a thin layer of discoloured varnish overall, the painting appears to be good condition given it's age.
FRAME
Held in a Baroque carved and gilded wood frame
