Description
- Abraham Willaerts
- Coastal landscape with Dutch shipping in choppy seas
- signed with initials and dated lower right: A. W. F / 1643
oil on panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 8 July 1999, lot 152, for £32,000.
Condition
The flat, stable support consists of two horizontal panels, bevelled along the upper, right and left hand margins. A batten has been inserted into the reverse along the panel join.
The signed paint surface is clean and secure, though the sails have become transparent where pigments have abraded. The detail of the work is well-preserved. The panel join is vaguely visible on the paint surface due to slightly discoloured retouchings, but no major damages to the work are visible.
Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings, and further reveals extensive scattered retouchings to the sky and the sea, especially in the foreground. Yet, bar a few scattered spot retouchings, the ships and figures seem to remain largely original.
Offered in a stained wood frame in good condition with a few minor losses and dents.
