Description
- Govaert Dircksz. Camphuysen
- A barn interior with four cows, a milk maid cleaning a pot, and earthenware pots in the foreground
- signed and dated (strengthened) lower right: G .Camphuÿsen . 1645
- oil on panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 7 April 1982, lot 21.
Condition
The actual painting is a lot warmer and more red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel consists of 2 planks joined horizontally. The panel is cradled because of a thin horizontal split running through the lower plank. Another thin repaired split can be made out running right above the join. The paint layer is generally sound, if a little thin in the darker passages, and the impasto of the highlights in particular is nicely preserved. Tiny scattered retouchings can be made out in the lower ground, in the roof and the background and in the cows in the back, though no damages are otherwise present. The paint surface is under a slightly yellowed varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals some further scattered retouchings.
Offered in a plain wood frame with moulded borders and a gilt fillet in good condition.
