Catalogue Note

Hubert Sattler was a painter of landscapes, architecture and historical scenes, who studied first under his father, Johann Michael, and then with J.J. Schindler in his native city, Vienna.  He travelled widely, to the Far and Middle East between 1842 and 1846 and to North and Central America in 1850, providing a date for this drawing.

As the artist's inscription states, the view depicts the valley of the river Yumuri, Cuba, with the 3000 ft hills known as the Pan de Matanzas in the background.  At the center left are the Guadeloupe, San Diego and Mulato sugar mills, all powered by steam.
