Catalogue Note
The vigorous use of chalk and wash and the stylized characterization of the figures in this sheet are reminiscent of the work of Bartholomäus Spranger, who was court painter to Emperor Rudolf II at the court of Prague from 1581 until his death in 1611. See, for example, Spranger's drawing in the same media depicting Psyche and Cupid, in the Prentenkabinet der Rijksuniversiteit, Leiden.1 In the early 17th century Spranger's distinctive style was highly influential, due not only to his extensive work as a painter for Rudolf II, but also to the widely disseminated prints made by Goltzius and others after his designs.
