Catalogue Note

This portrait forms part of a small group of portraits by Brosamer, all of which date from the 1520s, and were probably painted in Nuremberg or Fulda, and which depict sitters drawn from south German families such as the Haler, Fuerleger and Merian (for which see, for example, Irene Kühnel Kunze, `Hans Brosamer und der Meister HB mit dem Greifenkopf', in Zeitschrift für Kunstwissenschaft, 1960, pp. 78-9 et passim). Another from this group, the Portrait of Jochem Wirman of 1521, was sold in these Rooms, 9 July 1998, lot 242.
