Condition

STRUCTURE On a very slightly bowed three piece panel, with four butterfly wing supports. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be good condition with stable pigments that have retained their original vivid colouring giving the painting a vivacity at odds with it's age. There is no apparent loss of paint or damage except for some old bitchumised retouching to four vertical repaired panel splits in the background. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some very minor retouching to the panel splits mentioned above particularly to that above her right shoulder, other that that there are some very very minor spots of retouching to the panel edges but otherwise the sitter seems well-preserved. There is also evidence of a thick milky uneven varnish overall. Catalogue Note

This beautiful portrait dates from circa 1619.  According to old labels on the reverse, it hung at Tullialan Castle in Perthshire, built in c.1812-1820 by Admiral Lord Keith.  His granddaughter Emily married Henry, 4th Marquess of Lansdowne and the portrait was subsequently moved to their Scottish seat, Meikleour House, which was remodelled by Bryce in 1870.
