Condition
Both canvases have effective old relinings which have not flattened the paint surface. The paint surfaces are clean, under quite a thick varnish, and appear to the naked eye to be in generally good condition with just some small areas of abrasion. Inspection under UV light reveals that in the portrait of Anna there are some very minor retouchings to her face. Some more concentrated retouching is present in her right shoulder, to the right of her neck and the left of her dress, as well as some minor strengthenings in her dress. In the portrait of Sybrandt, some very minor retouchings flouresce in his face and dress as well as in the small area of abrasion to the right of his shirt. Offered in polished wooden frames with old inactive worm holes which are otherwise in good condition.

Sijbrand Oosterling was buried in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam on 17th March 1708 (according to the Amsterdam Municipal Archives online database: NL-SAA-1191823). The pendant presumably portrays his wife, but no record of Anna Verbie, Virbie, or Anna Oosterling has yet been found. We are grateful to Dr Robert Gerhardt for his help in cataloguing this pair of portraits.
