Provenance

Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Lambe, G.C.B., C.V.O (1900-1960)

Condition

The pen and ink in this watercolour remains largely strong and the watercolour pigments are fresh. The paper has discoloured somewhat and there is occasional surface dirt and noticeable foxmarks. Within the sky there are two small localised areas of discolouration possibly associated with previous restoration. This work has not been laid down and it has been suggested that it would clean well.

Catalogue Note

According to Lear's inscription, this plein air drawing was made in half an hour, on the evening of the 6th February 1866. Having left England for Venice in September 1865, Lear then travelled south to Malta, where he took a house, three miles from Valetta. Apart from a brief visit to the neighbouring island of Gozo, he remained on Malta for almost three months, before travelling on to Corfu, via Dalmatia and Montenegro.
