Catalogue Note

As de Bisschop noted on the verso of this drawing, it records a painting by the Sienese artist Francesco Vanni (1565-1609) - in fact that artist's great altarpiece, Simon Magus rebuked by Saint Peter, which Vanni was summoned to Rome by Pope Clement VIII to paint for Saint Peter's.  Vanni's composition was also subsequently recorded both in a mosaic and in an engraving by Jacques Callot.
