  • Gouache, with touches of gum arabic;
    indistinctly signed in black ink: W van Roijn

     

Condition

Laid down. Big oil stain on back of left side which seems to have had some effect on recto. Black framing bands worn and damaged from old mount. Some losses of paint in various places - stork's wings, tree trunk bottom right; some scratches.

Catalogue Note

This is closely comparable to another signed work by van Royen commissioned by the Amsterdam merchant, Theodorus de Leeuw, which shows ornamental birds in the park of his country estate.1  In these works, and in his watercolours of individual birds, van Royen shows himself as a link between Hondecoeter and Schouman in the genre of bird paintings.
