Condition
Laid down on old backing sheet, and then mounted. Sold in modern wood frame. The drawing is rather yellowed and has scattered foxing. There are two small darker stains at the upper right corner and just to the left of it. A small worm-type hole near the lower right corner, on the dead soldier's knee. The chalk is still strong.

Catalogue Note
Van der Meulen accompanied several of the campaigns of King Louis XIV in the Low Countries between 1667 and 1673, recording daily military life as well as major seiges and battles. The greatest record of this is the famous tapestry series, L'Histoire du Roi, designed by van der Meulen and Charles le Brun, but a number of other paintings and prints associated with these campaigns are also known. The present drawing is very close to van der Meulen's battle studies made for the project, although it has not been connected to any known composition.
