Catalogue Note

This attractive study of a stag and his family is characteristic of many of Giandomenico's animal subjects in its arrangement on a kind of ledge, on which the artist has placed his signature.  Interestingly, he used this grouping on the left of a larger composition of Three Gentlemen Observing a Herd of Deer, formerly in the collection of H.S. Reitlinger.1

Giandomenico's studies of animals are varied and admired.  They are generally dated late in his career and connected with the decorations he painted in the family villa at Zianigo.  Some of his subject matter can be traced to the prints of Johann Elias Ridinger, such as the mountain goat standing on a rock, which appears in a drawing formerly in the collection of H.S. Reitlinger, and which Tiepolo, as with the present example, incorporated in several larger compositions.2  See also lot 118.
