Catalogue Note

Although he was a great landscape artist, very little is known about Mandevare.  In 1804 he published a guide to landscape painting entitled Principes raisonnés du Paysage a l'usage des écoles des départements de l'Empire français, dessinés d'après nature.  This was a guide to teach even the least gifted pupil how to draw from nature and it included lithographs after studies of trees, rocks and panoramic landscapes.  This particular tree may have been a study for that publication.
