Description

  • Govert Flinck
  • Portrait of a Gentleman, bust length
  • oil on panel, oval

Condition

The panel is uncradeled, but the upper 3cm has been lost and replaced. It is difficult to determine if this fragment is part of the original panel. The main body of the panel is well preserved but the surface of the additional strip has now began to flake seriously and will require immediate attention. The paint surface itself is quite well preserved although it has suffered from wear in parts of the tunic. The panel has recently been cleaned and scattered re-touchings are visible to the brim of the hat, the man's ear and some details of his tunic. The face itself appears well preserved and free of intervention. This lot is offered in a modern hexagonal dark stained wood frame with a painted wooden slip in good condition.
