Description

  • Portrait of the Duke of Alba (1507-1582), head and shoulders, in armour
  • inscribed lower right: duca d'alba
  • oil on panel

Condition

The stable, flat support appears to consist of two vertical panels, cradled to the reverse. Some retouching work along the panel join and to three old vertical restored splits lower left, lower right and upper right and measuing approximately 15cm. each is visible to the naked eye due to discolouration. The paint surface is secure and in good condition, though a little dirty and slightly abraded in the darker tones of the sitter's bear and sash. The painting is under a reflective varnish, but inspection under UV light does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and further reveals scattered retouchings to the background and periphery of the painting. The sitter's face remains largely untouched. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in fair condition.
