Description

  • Girolamo Forabosco
  • David with the head of Goliath
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has a firm relining which has somewhat flattened the paint surface. Otherwise the paint surface is secure, though dirty, under an uneven varnish. There is a vertical stretcher mark visible on the surface of the painting parallel to and approximately 6 cm. in from the left hand margin. Some fine retouchings along this mark are visible to the naked eye. There is also a circular restored damage of approx. 3cm2 lower right. No other damages are discernible. Proper inspection under UV light is rather impeded by the uneven varnish but this does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and further reveals fairly extensive retouchings to the background. Bar some infilling of craquelure to his forehead and his left cheek, David's face seems to be largely original. Offered in a gilt wood frame in fairly good condition, with a few losses.
