Condition

The copper panel is stable but the upper left corner has buckled and remains uneven leaving numerous old losses. The varnish layer has now discoloured but the paint surface appears well preserved beneath, with only very minor marginal losses or wear. There have been some minor repairs to Christ's robe and the tree behind where the paint has become worn. This lot is offered with a stained wood frame with gilt sight edge in good condition.

Catalogue Note

We are most grateful to Dr Heiner Borggrefe for informing us of an etching by Crispin van de Passe inscribed Joan: Rottenhammer pinxit which confirms Rottenhammer as the author of the composition. Dr Borggrefe, who knows the present work from photographs, suggests this may be a second autograph version of a lost original and does not rule out some help from an assistant in the execution. A photograph of a related signed drawing can be found in the Witt Library.
