Condition
STRUCTURE
The canvas has been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in good condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the background above and to the left of the right hand figure's head and arm. There is also some minor retouching and infilling to craquelure in the head and arm itself, as well as to the contours of the shoulder. There is strengthening to the background on the left at they back of the left hand sitter as well as strengthening in his costume and hair. There are small areas of retouching in the background on either side of the figure of Christ, and further minor scattered retouchings predominantly in the lower section of the painting. There is a thick and discoloured opaque varnish overall.
FRAME
Held in a carved and painted Dutch 16th century style frame.
