Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been laid down on board. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good overall condition. There is evidence of some very minor abrasion to the upper right of the sitter's head. There has also been some flattening caused by the addition of the cnavas support which is visible in the hair, face and neck. There is evidence of retouching in the background above and below the inscription. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a thick discoloured varnish overall and confirms evidence of the aforementioned retouching centre right. There is also some very minor scattered retouching to the background, face and collar. FRAME Held in an oval gilt wood frame.
