Description
- The Pseudo Battaglioli
- a capriccio view with a footbridge over a river, a large cathedral in the background
- oil on canvas
Provenance
In the collection of the family of the present owner for at least four generations.
Condition
The painting is slightly bluer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is in largely good condition, though a little dirty and under a slightly yellowed varnish. The paint surface is quite uneven, with some fine but pronounced craquelure along its upper stretch and some repaired frame abrasion along the margins, particularly along the right hand margin. Some retouchings to the margins have become discoloured and are therefore visible to the naked eye. No major damages to the work are apparent. Inspection under UV light is impeded by the aforementioned reflective varnish but does indicate some older scattered spot retouchings to the sky upper right and some concentrated retouchings to the sky below the bridge. Offered in a gilt wood frame in fair condition.
