Description
- Johann Christian Vollerdt
- A River landscape with figures on the bank and sheep grazing; A river landscape with fishermen dredging a weir
- the former signed and dated lower left: Vollerdt.p.1758
the latter signed and dated lower left: Vollerdt.p.1754. - a pair, both oil on canvas
Provenance
In the possession of the present owner for at least the last 40 years.
Condition
The paintings are less red in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest.
The canvases have old but effective relinings.
The paint surfaces are clean, secure and in good condition, though a little flat in parts, with the colours and details of the work well-preserved.
No major damages to the painting are apparent, though both paintings have old, very fine, restored horizontal surface scratches/splits in the sky, approximately 5 cm. in from the upper margin and approximately 45 and 25 cm. long respectively.
The former painting has a handful of discoloured retouchings scattered in the sky, most notably to a small knock upper left, measuring approximately 1 by 2.5 cm. and to the aforementioned surface scratch/split. Some of these retouchings can be seen in the catalogue illustration.
These retouchings fluoresce, as do a few spot retouchings to the bank of the river in the former painting, but the painting is largely masked by the varnish covering the work and proper inspection under UV light is impeded. The same applies to the latter painting, in which just a few retouchings to the aforementioned split and around the trees centre and centre left fluoresce.
Offered in carved and gilt wood frames in good condition though with a handful of minor knocks.
