Description

  • Jean-Baptiste Pillement
  • A pair of river landscapes with figures approaching a bridge
  • each signed with initials and dated lower left: JP. 1794

  • a pair, both oil on canvas laid on board

Condition

The paintings are a little darker and less yellow than the catalogue illustration suggests. Both canvases have been laid on board and have painted borders of 1.5 cm which are covered by their frames. The signed and dated paint surfaces of both works are in good condition and secure, though the 'daytime' painting shows minor signs of abrasion in the bridge, the background details and the sky. Both paintings have a fine craquelure running throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals some old scattered minor spot retouchings to the aforementioned work in the sky, to the bridge and the foreground of the work. No retouchings fluoresce under UV light on the 'dusk' painting, though older retouchings may be masked by the varnish covering both paintings. Offered in gold painted wood and plaster frames in fair condition, with a few knocks.
