Literature

Condition
The painting is brighter than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a modern relining.
The paint surface is a little abraded in the darker tones and sky but the details of the work are largely well-preserved.
There are two pentimenti visible to the naked eye, the first is a triangular projection in the sky to the right and there is also a diagonal pentimento below the tree branches to the right. Both are visible in the catalogue illustration.
No major damages to the work are apparent.
Inspection under UV light reveals an old restored tear lower centre, measuring approximately 3.5 cm. and some old, fairly extensive retouchings, with some scattered newer spot retouchings to the sky. Just a handful of scattered spot retouchings fluoresce in the foreground.
Offered in a modern gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition with a few minor losses.

Catalogue Note
The warm light and classical setting betray the strong influence of Claude Lorrain in this work. Two large pentimenti can be seen to the right of the composition, indicating that two pyramids have been replaced by an elegant building giving onto the seafront.
