Pierre-Jacques Volaire

The following condition report is provided by Sarah Walden who is an external expert and not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting on fine original canvas has a fairly old but strong lining and stretcher. It seems to have been cleaned at some point in the last century, with some partial retouching. This painting hasn't suffered from any of the harsh wear visible in certain places on its pendant (lot 263). The sky is beautifully unworn with a fine even old patina and a pentiment of the tree against the sky just emerging at lower left. Two tiny recent chipped flakes can be seen near the top edge and one single heavy example of old retouching has darkened along the outline of the rocks by the top right corner. Elsewhere throughout the painting is in exceptionally lovely condition. This report was not done under laboratory conditions.
