Description

  • Andrea Locatelli
  • a landscape with figures resting beside classical ruins
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

With Lampronti, Rome, 1992;
Acquired by the present owner in 1999.

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The darker tones of the painting have become a little abraded but elsewhere the detail and colours of the work are well-preserved. The paint surface is clean and secure with a fine craquelure running throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals retouchings along the margins of the painting, a 14 cm. vertical old restored tear to the tree trunk far left, a few scattered spot retouchings to the figures with some older retouchings to the skin tones indicated, and scattered spot retouchings to the trees and sky. Some of the retouchings to the sky are in response to very small old losses to the paint surface and are visible to the naked eye. Overall the painting is in good condition and is ready to hang. Offered in a gilt wood frame in fairly good condition.
