Acquired by the grandmother of a private collector, probably in Paris, just after the Second World War;
Thence by descent until sold, ('Property from a Private Collection'), London, Sotheby's, 24 April 2008, lot 115, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The support consists of a single vertical panel bevelled on all sides with a very slight convex bow. The paint surface is clean and secure, with the colours and details of the work well-preserved. No major damages to the work are apparent. Some old, discoloured retouchings are apparent to the plums in the left hand foreground and green grapes. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and further reveals scattered spot retouchings to the still life, background and marble ledge, with a more concentrated area of retouching, approximately 7 by 2cm. to running over the orange fruit far left. The painting is in overall good condition and is ready to hang. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition if a little rubbed.

A comparable composition, with a similarly laden basket of fruit, is in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, a version of which, dated An X (1802), was sold in New York, Christie's, 26 January 2011, lot 112. At the time of the painting's sale in 2008 the attribution was endorsed by Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie.
