  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 21 October 1964, lot 33 (as Cornelis Kruys), for £920 to Goyen;
With Alfred Brod Gallery, London;
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 17 April 1991, lot 77 (as Follower of Willem Claesz. Heda) for £13,750;
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 13 December 1996, lot 308 (unsold).

Condition

The stable, flat support consists of two vertical panels, cradled to the reverse. The panel join is visible on the surface of the painting and some retouchings along the join have become discoloured. The paint surface is rather abraded, particularly in the background, although the impasto of the lemon peel is well-preserved. Retouchings to the background and a handful of scattered retouchings to the tablecloth have become visible to the naked eye due to discolouration. No major damages to the work are apparent. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and suggests that the cherries, bread roll, roemer and lemon are largely untouched, though older retouchings may be obscured by the reflective varnish. Offered in a black and gilt wood frame in good condition.
