Condition

The support consists of two planks joined in the centre which are uncradled and bevelled on all but the right hand side. The painting is now dirty and both its varnish and old restorations are much discoloured. There has been some additional old cracking at the top of the panel near the join. The paint surface is in fairly good condition overall; there are some abraded areas, notably in the hair and there has been restoration to this on both sides of the head and to the fringe. There is further retouching along the old join and to an 8cm horizontal scrape on the sitters cheek and to the old damages at the top of the panel. This lot is offered with a later and crudely adapted ebonized wood frame with later inserts.
