Catalogue Note

Much of the provenance which Eisele lists for this painting refers to another version of the composition, which has similar measurements but is on canvas (see, for example the lot sold Cologne, Lempertz, 23 November 1969, lot 292). It is this version, rather than the current work, which can be more readily linked to Hofstede de Groot's cat. no. 121, which he indeed catalogues as on canvas.1 Another version of the composition, which is identifiable with Hofstede de Groot's cat. no. 88 and is also dated 1667, was sold London, Christie's 28 April 2006, lot 41. Hofstede de Groot does not list a work on panel which matches the description of the current painting.

Eisele attributes the staffage of the current work to Johannes Lingelbach.
