Description

- The Battle of Issus: alexander the Great's army defeats Darius and the Persians
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Phillips, 14 December 1999, lot 37 as attributed to Giuseppe Pinacci, for £62,000, where purchased by the present owner.
Condition
The canvas has a recent firm relining which has not overly flattened the paint surface. There is an area of wear in the upper left corner. The paint surface is otherwise secure and in very good overall condition with much original impasto remaining. There has been some minor discolouration in the blues due to fugitive pigments. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a 10 x 8 cm damage in the sky upper left and minor scattered retouchings elsewhere. The varnish remains clear and even.
Offered in plain gilt wood frame in good condition.
