Description

  • A female martyr saint, half length
  • tempera on panel, gold ground, trilobe shape

Condition

The panel is flat and stable, with evidence of old woodworm on the reverse notably to the left hand side. The lower right lobe of the trefoil has been trimmed. The gold ground has worn thin in some areas, notably on the left of the panel and has been largely refreshed. The tempera is generally well preserved and the degree of wear acceptable. Inspection under UV light reveals extensive intervention to the hands and to the borders of her costume; other retouchings are minor and local in nature. Offered in a plain trefoil shaped gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dott. Andrea De Marchi for endorsing the attribution to Puccinelli on the basis of photographs. Although perhaps not trilobe in shape originally (a straight edge is visible from behind) this panel most probably formed the pinnacle of a polyptych. For the artist see A. De Marchi, in M.T. Filieri ed., Sumptuosa tabula picta. Pittori a Lucca tra gotico e rinascimento, exhibition catalogue, Lucca, Museo Nazionale di Villa Giunigi, 28 March - 5 July 1998, pp. 148-177.
